How the species are matched
A closed terrarium holds humidity, so it takes the moisture-loving species: sheet moss across the floor, mood and fern moss as accents, tree apron moss on driftwood. An open bowl dries between mistings, which suits pincushion, haircap, sun moss, and the dry-ground specialists — emerald feather and full sun moss. A vivarium is misted like a closed build; star moss adds height where an animal won’t flatten it.
The landscape split follows the guide’s rule of thumb: about 60% of the footprint in floor moss, a quarter in accent mounds, and the rest left open for stone, wood, and paths. Moss placed against hardscape should be pressed firmly into contact — anchoring matters more than substrate depth.
