Pick how deep your shade runs, enter the area, and get the cheapest size split at live shop prices.
Not a perfect rectangle? Use average length × width. For the knit-closed approach, order 90–95% of the area; the calculator uses your exact number.
Accent mosses (cushion, mood, haircap) are priced on their own pages — and a mixed or tricky site is exactly what the free consultation is for.
Volume pricing is built in: sheet and carpet moss run $13.95/sq ft at 1 sq ft down to $2.90 at 1,000 (sale tiers shown struck through); fern moss $11.95 to $3.45; turf carpet $17.95 to $4.30.
Where Shade Moss Works
Moss for shady areas means under trees, along north-facing walls, in shaded beds and anywhere grass has repeatedly failed. These are the sites where a shade tolerant moss outperforms every alternative, because moss does not need the light grass does.
Arriving from a different search? Sagina (Sagina subulata, Irish or Scotch moss) and sedum ground cover for shade are flowering plants, not true mosses, and we do not carry them. The same goes for no mow grass for shade, shade flowers for California gardens, or shade vines for zone 9: if the spot is too dark for all of those, that is exactly where moss takes over. Does moss grow in shade? It prefers it — and how to grow moss in shaded areas is the whole subject of this page.
Below, ten species grouped by what they do. Two cover ground, six work as accents, and two suit shade that is also wet. Moss ground cover for shade is the first group; the rest sit within it.

Under a dense canopy
Full shade under mature trees, where the ground is bare or holds thin leaf litter. Sheet and carpet moss are the groundcover here, and mood moss takes the deepest corners. This is where moss in shade does what nothing else will, and where moss grow in shade with the least help from you.

North walls and building shade
Ground that never sees direct sun because a wall or a building blocks it. Consistent low light all year, which suits moss for low light areas better than the seasonal shade under deciduous trees. The best site there is for a low light moss.

Shaded beds and paths
Dappled light at a woodland edge, along a shaded path, or a moss for shade garden planting. Growing moss in shade like this gives you more species to choose from, because dappled light suits the accent mosses as well as the groundcovers. Growing moss in shady areas is easier than growing it anywhere else.
THE ONE THRESHOLD THAT MATTERS
Roughly four hours of direct sun is the point at which sheet moss becomes the wrong choice. Below that, and especially where the light is dappled and moving rather than landing in one place, shade moss is the right answer. Above it, see sun moss instead, or work out where moss will grow on your site first.

Shade Moss Ground Cover
Two species cover ground. Moss ground cover for shade means one of these, and they are the cheapest way to green a large shaded area. For moss ground cover full shade planting, sheet and carpet are the two.

Sheet Moss
Hypnum imponens
The workhorse. The most economical species for covering a large shaded area and the one most people mean by a moss lawn.
| Light | Deep shade to shade |
|---|---|
| Moisture | Moderate to high |
| pH | Low to neutral |
| Substrate | Soil and rock |
Order about 95 percent of the area for immediate cover. Sections planted half an inch apart knit closed in six to twelve months.

Carpet Moss
Hypnum cupressiforme
The same conditions as sheet moss with a rougher, less even face. Choose it where a uniform sheet would look too manicured.
| Light | Deep shade to shade |
|---|---|
| Moisture | Moderate to high |
| pH | Low to neutral |
| Substrate | Soil and rock |
Both are Hypnum, they want the same conditions and they are routinely confused with each other. Also handles foot traffic once established.

Shade Loving Accent Mosses
Six more shade tolerant species for texture, height and detail. Shade loving ground cover moss is covered above; these are the accents that sit within it, on rock and bark, or where a shaded slope needs holding.

Cushion Moss
Leucobryum glaucum
Sculptural domed colonies used as accents rather than cover. Holds on steep ground and suppresses weeds.
| Light | Part shade to shade |
|---|---|
| Moisture | Moderate |
| pH | Acidic |
| Substrate | Acidic soil and humus |
Pale minty or white when dry, deep green when moist. That color change is a moisture reading, not stress.

Mood Moss, or Rock Cap Moss
Dicranum scoparium
Boulder accents, woodland sculpture and vertical elements. Takes the deepest shade of the accent species.
| Light | Part shade to full shade |
|---|---|
| Moisture | Dry to moderate |
| pH | Acidic |
| Substrate | Rock and boulders |
Will tan in too much sun and must dry between waterings. Sufficiently traffic tolerant to use between walkway stones.

Fern Moss
Thuidium delicatulum
Boulder blanket and moist woodland floor. Airier than sheet moss, so planting pushes through it.
| Light | Shade to part shade |
|---|---|
| Moisture | High |
| pH | Low to neutral |
| Substrate | Humus and rock |
Will not tolerate drought. Curls and feels crusty when dry, lace-like when moist. The one to choose for genuinely damp shade.

Spoon Leaved Moss
Bryoandersonia illecebra
Woodland colonies and oak understory, for dappled light rather than deep shade.
| Light | Dappled light |
|---|---|
| Moisture | Moderate to high |
| pH | Low to neutral |
| Substrate | Soil and humus |
Orient all tufts the same direction or the mat looks stringy. Orange hues appear on sunnier sites.

Haircap Moss
Polytrichum commune
Erosion control on slopes, streambanks and path edges. One of the tallest at up to 20cm.
| Light | Dappled light to part shade |
|---|---|
| Moisture | Moderate to high |
| pH | Acidic |
| Substrate | Acidic soil and sand |
Extremely drought and freeze tolerant, and the species to specify where a shaded slope has to hold. Shallow depressions help seat the colonies.

Shade That Is Also Wet
If the ground holds water after rain, the species above will struggle and these two will not. Both want high to saturated moisture and neither will hold on a site that dries out.

Star Moss
Aulacomnium
Shaded ground that stays wet. Rain gardens, bog planting and low corners that pool.
| Light | Sun, dappled light or shade |
|---|---|
| Moisture | High to saturated |
| pH | Acidic organic soil |
| Substrate | Organic soil |
Specify it where water sits. It is a hydrology indicator as much as a plant.

Turf Carpet Moss
Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus
Wet shaded ground, bioswale edges and stream margins. One of the biggest mosses we carry.
| Light | Dappled light to moderate shade |
|---|---|
| Moisture | High to saturated |
| pH | Low to neutral |
| Substrate | Organic soil |
NOT suitable for frequent foot traffic, and it will not hold on a site that dries out. Give it hardscape to creep over.

Not in the chart: emerald feather moss, the fine-textured shade species — its landscaping grade is out of stock right now, but the soil-free live moss mat covers the same ground and cuts to shape with scissors.
Sheet moss is the most foot traffic tolerant of them, and gentle walking in the first weeks actually helps it anchor by keeping the base in contact with the ground. Turf carpet moss is the one to avoid where people walk regularly.
Prices are per square foot at that order size and are already built into the shop. No code, no minimum. Above $2,500 a further discount applies and above $5,000 a larger one. See bulk and wholesale pricing.
How Much Shade Moss You Need
Shade moss is priced by the square foot, from a single foot upward. Most gardens take between 25 and 100 square feet: a shaded strip beside a path, the bare ground under a maple, the corner where grass gave up.
For a finished look straight away, order about ninety to ninety five percent of the area you want covered. To go further for less, plant sections half an inch apart and let them knit closed over six to twelve months. Moss spreads slowly, and gaps left at planting tend to stay. Covering a large area? See bulk and wholesale pricing.
Rich soil is a liability rather than a help, because it feeds the weeds you have just removed. Take out the competition, compact what is left, and press the moss down firmly so the base meets the ground. Moss has no roots and anchors by contact alone.

“By far the best quality moss i ordered online so far. I tried amazon before and some suppliers on Etsy but sometimes the moss was dormant, the package not moist enough or very messy. But the sheet moss I ordered here was beautiful and well packaged!”

Frequently Asked Questions About Shade Moss
Sheet moss, for most sites. It takes the deepest shade, covers the most ground for the money and handles being walked on once established. Carpet moss is the same plant family with a rougher face. If the ground stays damp, fern moss is the better choice.
Yes. Moss for full shade is what most of our range is for. Ten of the twelve species we carry want shade of some kind, and only two need open sun. Moss does not photosynthesise the way grass does, so deep shade under a canopy is where it outperforms every alternative.
Moss for dry shade is a smaller list. Mood moss and cushion moss both take dry to moderate moisture, and mood moss in particular must dry between waterings. Sheet and fern moss want steadier moisture, so on genuinely dry shaded ground start with mood.
That is its best use. Shade moss ground cover needs no mowing, no fertilizer and no reseeding, and it holds ground where grass has repeatedly failed. Sheet and carpet moss are the two groundcover species; the rest are accents.
Roughly four hours of direct sun is the point at which sheet moss becomes the wrong choice. Below that, and especially where the light is dappled and moving rather than landing in one place, it is fine. Above it, look at bryum or full sun moss instead.
Against a north wall, yes, and that is one of the best sites for it. Low light moss outdoors is exactly what these species evolved for. Indoors is different, because artificial light is weaker than it looks and a closed environment holds moisture; that is a terrarium question rather than a landscaping one.
Once established, yes. Sheet moss is the most tolerant because it grows low and horizontal, and normal walking including children crossing the garden will not damage it. Gentle walking in the first weeks actually helps it anchor. Turf carpet moss is the one to avoid where people walk regularly.
For a finished look straight away, order about ninety to ninety five percent of the area you want covered. To go further for less, plant sections half an inch apart and let them knit closed over six to twelve months.
