Remember the honest part of drought tolerance: dormant moss browns and waits for rain. Established plantings need no irrigation routine, only patience. Mixed or unusual site? Ask Olivia.

Which Moss Species Are Drought Tolerant?
Drought-tolerant mosses are ideal for gardeners and homeowners who work with dry shade, rocky slopes, and areas with low water. Unlike traditional grass, some mosses can survive for long periods of drought.
We’ve selected the best drought-tolerant mosses. Bryum moss (also called sun moss) can be used as a groundcover for dry, sunny gardens and Star moss thrives in a similar environment and can be used for decorative purposes. Cushion moss, Tree Apron Moss, and Mood moss prefer partial shade to full shade, can handle periods of dryness, and are used as accent mosses in garden designs.
While drought-tolerant mosses like Sun Moss and Bryum handle dry shaded areas well, true full-sun drought conditions (think south-facing slopes or rock gardens) are often better suited to creeping thyme, our sister brand Competitive Lawn specializes in this drought-champion lawn alternative for sunny low-water landscapes.”

Drought-Tolerant Mosses for Sun
The two most drought-tolerant mosses are Bryum moss and Star moss. They thrive in hot, dry shade and sunny yards. They tolerate dryness, establish quickly, and work great in areas where other mosses struggle due to the lack of moisture.
Bryum moss is a sun-loving moss species that is often used between pavers or as a grass alternative, while Star moss is used as an accent moss.

Bryum (Sun) Moss
Bryum caespiticium
Bryum moss is a great groundcover for dry, sunny areas and spreads in low-growing mats. This moss can handle foot traffic and is drought-tolerant once it is established.
It thrives in partial to full sun and is often used between pavers, as a primary groundcover for sunny gardens and other areas with limited water. Bryum moss is perfect for dry, urban areas and is a great solution for homeowners and landscapers who want to grow moss in dry, sunny places.

Full Sun Moss
Racomitrium canescens
Full sun moss is the drought specialist of the catalog: gray-green, drought-tolerant mats cultivated on geotextile backing, at home in direct sun and wind. It thrives on sand, gravel and lean mineral ground — stone walls, sun-exposed hardscape, green roofs and Japanese-inspired gardens are its natural jobs.
The mats lay like turf and cut to any shape, and the species is intentionally shipped dry and dormant — dull on arrival, rapidly green after watering. Give it drainage rather than irrigation; waterlogging is the one thing it will not forgive. See the full full sun moss guide.

Drought-Tolerant Accent Mosses for Shade
The mosses in this section should be used as ‘accent’ mosses because they don’t handle foot traffic well. These mosses are great for areas with partial to full shade that experience dry spells or inconsistent watering. These mosses can grow dormant during times of extreme drought but will bounce back once the water returns.

Cushion Moss
Leucobryum glaucum
Cushion moss gets its name from its tight dome-like growth form that resembles cushions/pincushions. It is resilient in dry shade, prefers acidic, nutrient-poor soil, and can handle areas with limited water.
You can use this moss in dry, hand-shaped landscapes where other mosses struggle. Keep in mind that it may go dormant during extreme drought, but that is only temporary until the humidity levels return.

Mood/Rock Cap Moss
Dicranum scoparium
Rock Cap Moss, also called Mood Moss, grows in dense, upright tufts and is well-adapted to dry environments with nutrient-poor soil. It needs to establish itself first because otherwise it won’t survive.
You can use this moss for sloped and eroded areas and as decor moss for a shaded garden with periodic dry periods. It is a durable moss to use in dry, shaded terrain with minimal irrigation and maintenance.

Tree Apron Moss
Anomodon attenuatus
Tree Apron Moss grows in spreading mats and can be found in nature around tree trunks, roots, and bark. It wraps itself in the forest around the base of hardwood trees, but also on nutrient-poor soil.
This moss is great to use on vertical surfaces in dry shade. Use this moss to cover trees or walls in your garden. It needs moisture until it is established, but in shaded areas, it can do without by retaining surface moisture.

We offer five species that handle dry and low-water conditions well. Bryum (Sun) Moss and Star Moss are by far the most drought-tolerant and thrive in partial to full sun. For shaded environments, we sell Cushion Moss, Rock Cap Moss, and Tree Apron Moss.
Yes, but once established. Moss has the unique ability to go dormant during droughts to protect itself, and it revives with rainfall or dew. Star Moss and Rock Cap Moss are especially well adapted to handle humidity fluctuations.
Star Moss is the most sun-tolerant species we offer. It is an accent moss that doesn’t like to be walked upon, so if you need a groundcover alternative to grass, we recommend Bryum moss.

Make sure the soil drains well, it is nutrient-poor, and compacted. Remove all the debris and vegetation, and scratch the soil lightly to allow the moss to adhere well.

Yes, initially during the establishment phase. Water it daily in the morning until the moss is well attached to the surface. Once the moss is established, you can slowly reduce watering because rainfall and dew are usually sufficient.
Yes, you can, but it depends on the species. Bryum moss is used as a lawn-alternative groundcover and can handle moderate foot traffic. Star moss can handle light foot traffic, but none of the other drought-tolerant mosses in this collection can.
If you experience dry summers with irregular rainfall, and if you have poor soil, these mosses are an excellent solution. Use Star and Bryum moss for full sun, and Rock Cap, Tree Apron and Cushion moss for shaded areas.
Yes. Rock Cap Moss and Tree Apron Moss are great for soil stabilization. Once these mosses are achored, they keep the soil together.
