About Moss & Stone Gardens
A pioneering moss company that aims to reshape how moss is used in landscaping and for indoor applications.
Moss & Stone Gardens is based in East Stroudsburg (Pennsylvania) and is a pioneering moss company that aims to reshape how moss is used in landscaping and for indoor applications. Our humble beginnings started with selling wild-harvested moss and have now developed into a company that is moving towards sustainable practices and a national leader in moss cultivation and innovation.
We specialize in both preserved moss and living moss applications with products for outdoor landscapes, terrariums, green interiors, and in the future, ecological restoration. We are committed to bringing sustainable products to the market by moving away from wild-harvested moss. Every step of our work is rooted in a commitment to environmental ethics, regenerative design, and scientific integrity.
Our Story
After Niels founded Moss & Stone Gardens, we began selling loose, wild-harvested moss for gardens and other outdoor applications. This happened not long after he realized that moss gardens are biodiverse habitats, in contrast to traditional grass lawns. When the demand grew, so did our awareness and our concerns about extractive harvesting. It was time for phase 2.
Niels was blessed to find two bright minds, Alyssa and Olivia, who could help him with the transition towards ethical land stewardship. Both are practitioner-scientists, and with Alyssa’s ecological expertise and Olivia’s background in sustainability and education, the team began experimenting with cultivation techniques to meet commercial needs while maintaining ecological integrity.
Through research and fieldwork, we are slowly transitioning from wild-harvested moss to moss farming with a focus on living moss mats and milkshakes. Our moss milkshakes are used for landscaping and indoor applications, but they show promise that they can be used for ecological restoration as well.
We believe in transformation of companies, nature, and people. Step by step, we will improve our business practices. Step by step, we will educate the public about sustainable landscaping, and step by step, we will improve our impact on both people and planet.
