What is racomitrium moss? Racomitrium moss (Racomitrium canescens), sold here as full sun moss, is a gray-green, drought-tolerant moss that forms low, tight mats of little star shapes. It tolerates full sun and wind, thrives on sand, gravel, and mineral surfaces, and is among the faster-growing species we carry — stone walls, sun-exposed hardscape, green roofs and Japanese-inspired gardens are its classic jobs. We cultivate it on geotextile backing so it lays like turf. It is one of the species in our moss species guide.
Full Sun Moss or Sun Moss (Bryum)? The Two Sun Species
Only two species in the catalog hold in open sun, and they divide the work. Full Sun Moss arrives as a mat on backing and covers area like turf. Sun Moss (Bryum) comes as small clumps that knit together, which suits paver joints and small patches. Botanical names lead: Racomitrium canescens is not Bryum caespiticium.

What Each Grade Is For
Green roofs, stone walls, sun-exposed hardscape and Japanese gardens. The mat cuts to any shape with scissors — keep the backing intact and it lays like turf.

Where Racomitrium Moss Works
Racomitrium is the species we reach for where every other moss taps out: full sun, wind, heat, and lean mineral ground. It also tolerates shade — sun-tolerant does not mean sun-required — so a mixed-light installation can run on one species:
Green roofs and stone caps. The classic Racomitrium jobs: lay the mats over a drained substrate on roofs, wall caps and gravel paths, cut to shape, and pin the edges while they anchor.
Hot architectural edges. In consultations we spec it for the zones with the greatest ambient heat and light — next to south walls, driveways and pool surrounds — as a transition zone before shade species take over.
Broad sunny pathways. The division of labor from our consultations: Racomitrium mats for broad coverage and fast installation, bryum moss for the detailed joints and cracks between stones.
Sandy and coastal sites. Lean, mineral, sandy ground is favorable, not a problem — it performs on substrates that defeat shade mosses, and tolerates the exposure that comes with them.
Bright Japanese gardens. The bright Zen garden groundcover: flat gray-green field, raked gravel, stone — with star moss where more height and texture is wanted.
Large installations. Over roughly 1,000 sq ft, Racomitrium mats and sheet moss are the practical choices — both come in large, fast-laying pieces. One caution from our notes: don't glue mats onto vertical rock faces; lay them on level or gently sloped ground.
Straight From Our Consultations
Shipped dry on purpose
Racomitrium mats are intentionally shipped dry — and can wait in that dormant state if you aren't ready to install. Dull on arrival, rapidly green after watering. Usually available for immediate shipment.
The yellow phase is normal
New installations sometimes go through a temporary yellowing phase before sprouting bright new growth. It regenerates quickly — new shoots within 3–4 weeks — so hold your nerve and keep the drainage good.
Drainage beats watering
The one thing it will not forgive is waterlogging. Give it a well-drained substrate — sand, gravel, a drained roof build-up — and it needs remarkably little from you after that.

Planting and Care by Grade
Landscaping mats
- Drainage first. Racomitrium requires a well-drained substrate — sand, gravel, or a drained roof build-up. It does not tolerate waterlogging; standing water is the one condition that defeats it.
- Lay, cut, pin. Lay mats edge to edge over the prepared surface, cut to shape with scissors with the backing intact, and pin the edges while they anchor.
- Water to wake, then step back. Water on installation to green it up, support it through the first weeks, then let sun and rain run the system. No misting regime — this is not a shade moss.
- Expect the yellow phase. A temporary yellowing before bright new growth is normal; new shoots come within 3–4 weeks.
Terrarium grade
- Built for the bright, dry builds where humid-loving species fail: desert-style, open-top, and dish gardens. Give it the brightest spot you have.
- Drainage rules here too — a gravel or sand base, water sparingly, and never a sealed humid build.
- Safe around vivarium animals: pesticide-free, cut fresh to order. Dull gray-green when dry, it reopens into little green stars with a light watering — the same dry-wake cycle as the outdoor mats.
