What is turf carpet moss? Turf carpet moss (Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus), also called shaggy carpet moss, shag moss, or springy turf moss, is a large, springy, fluffy lime-green moss — one of the biggest we carry, with a deep-pile turf look. It grows in swamps, along streams and in seepage areas, and despite the name it is not carpet moss (Hypnum cupressiforme), a different, walkable plant. It is one of the species in our moss species guide.
Turf Carpet or Carpet Moss? Two Different Plants
If you want the look of a lawn you can walk on, choose Sheet or Carpet Moss. Turf Carpet is for wet site planting: a bioswale edge, a stream margin, ground that stays consistently moist. On a site that is not consistently wet, give it hardscape to creep over.

What Each Grade Is For
Wet site planting: bioswale edges, stream margins and consistently moist shaded beds. On a site that is not consistently wet, give it hardscape to creep over. Ships dry and dormant, greens with misting.

Where Turf Carpet Moss Works
Turf carpet moss is the wet-meadow species: part shade to shade, high to saturated moisture, organic ground. Where water moves or lingers, its big springy mats look like a lawn that never gets mowed:
Bioswales and wet meadow edges. The guide’s headline uses: excellent for wet meadow transitions and bioswale plantings — engineered wet zones where turf grass drowns and mulch floats away.
Stream margins and seepage. Its natural habitat is swamps, stream edges and seepage areas — plant it where the ground never really dries and it runs on site water alone.
Visual islands on a sheet base. From our consultations: sheet moss as the connective base, with turf carpet — alongside cushion and mood — as the robust visual islands. Its deep pile reads as intentional structure.

Occasional steps, not a path
From our consultations: turf carpet tolerates occasional stepping but should not be treated as a heavy-use groundcover. Cross it to maintain it; route daily traffic around it.
Big moss, big presence
This is one of the biggest mosses — unusually large, loosely branching growth with a lime-green cast. A small quantity reads as a feature; it does not disappear into the ground plane.
Something to creep over
Its large, loose growth is best supported by consistently moist ground — and where the site is drier, by hardscape. Stones, logs and edges give the mats structure to climb and hold.

Planting and Care by Grade
Landscaping grade
- Pick consistently moist ground. Clear competing vegetation and press for firm contact in the wet zone — stream margins, bioswale edges, seepage areas. Organic, low to neutral pH soil suits it.
- On drier ground, add structure. Where the site is not consistently wet, surround the mats with stones, logs and hardscape to creep over — the structure does what the missing water would.
- Water like a wet site. Keep it damp through establishment; in its proper habitat the site does the watering afterward. This species runs on moisture that would drown the dry-loving mosses.
- Dry is not dead. It ships dry and dormant and springs back with misting — the deep pile lifts as it rehydrates.
Terrarium grade
- Ships fresh, not dormant. Press onto the substrate, keep the build humid, and give it bright indirect light — never direct sun through glass.
- Use the deep pile as the meadow of a build — a springy foreground lawn against taller species like haircap or star moss behind.
