Your moss arrives dry and dormant, not dead.

Moss dries out to survive drought, staying dormant, holding for months and in some species years, then greening up within minutes of water. Dry, curled or dull on arrival is normal: mist it, tuck it tight, water it in. After that, mist, do not soak, and let it dry between waterings. Only tan and brittle moss is a real concern.

Shade Moss

Moss is a shade plant by nature, so a shaded site is an advantage rather than a problem. If your ground is north-facing, under tree cover, or shaded by a building for most of the day, almost everything here will suit it.

Sheet Moss is the workhorse for shaded lawns and the most forgiving starting point. Carpet Moss forms dense, finished cover. Fern Moss suits paths and woodland edges. Tree Apron Moss wraps tree bases and climbs vertical surfaces — the species for the ground-to-bark transition beneath mature trees, where almost nothing else establishes. Haircap Moss stands tall in open shade. Spoon Leaved and Emerald Feather bring finer texture. Pincushion and Mood Moss add mounded structure against rock.

Shaded moss establishes fastest where direct sun reaches the ground for no more than an hour or two a day.

How much shade is enough?

Deep shade, dappled shade and a few hours of morning sun all work. What moss will not tolerate is prolonged direct afternoon sun on dry ground. If that describes your site, see sun moss instead.

Will moss grow in total shade?

Yes — deep shade is sheet and carpet moss country. Moss photosynthesizes at light levels grass cannot use.

How much do I order?

Order about 90–95% of the area and let it knit closed — planted close, shade moss reads as a finished surface in 6–12 months.

Which shade moss can be walked on?

Sheet moss is the most durable underfoot in shade; carpet moss takes moderate traffic too. Put stepping stones on daily routes.
