Moss Between Pavers, Stepping Stones & Flagstone | Sun & Shade Species

Moss Between Pavers, Stepping Stones & Flagstone

Moss for pavers stays inches tall, never needs mowing, and knits into joints grass cannot hold. One species for sunny joints, one for shade — sized to your patio by the calculator below.

Moss to plant between pavers is a two-species decision. Sunny joints go to Sun Moss (Bryum), which lives in pavement crevices in the wild; shaded joints go to Carpet Moss, the flat, velvety line designers ask for. Both ship fresh, cut to order in Pennsylvania.

Paver joint calculator

Joints are roughly 10% of a paved surface. Enter the whole paved area — we calculate the moss.

Measure the whole paved surface, stones included — the joint share setting does the rest.

Budget route for cracks and crevices: the Bryum Moss Milkshake covers 3 sq ft ($14.95) or 15 sq ft ($37.95) of joints as a pour-on slurry — slower, far cheaper.

Volume pricing is built in: Bryum falls from $29.95/sq ft at 1 sq ft to $9.95 at 1,000; Carpet Moss from $13.95 to $2.90. The calculator always finds the cheapest size split and shows sale prices where they apply. Trade volumes: wholesale pricing.

Which moss goes between pavers?

Bryum moss (Bryum caespiticium) growing between pavers in sun

Sunny joints: Sun Moss (Bryum). Bryum caespiticium thrives in exactly this niche in the wild — stonework joints, masonry, pavement crevices. Dense cushions press into narrow spaces, tolerate urban heat and intermittent drought, and can graft together and sprout new growth in 2–4 weeks. It also performs in shade, the safe pick for mixed-light paths. Full Bryum guide · Buy Bryum

Carpet moss around shaded stepping stones under trees

Shaded joints: Carpet Moss. Under trees or on the north side, carpet moss keeps the paving geometry legible with a flat, velvety joint line — and sheet moss takes over where a shaded path carries real foot traffic. Full Carpet Moss guide · Buy Carpet Moss

Two special cases. Stones that stand well proud of the ground suit star moss, a thicker, taller species that fills deep gaps. For broad coverage around pavers rather than joint-by-joint planting, full sun moss mats cut with scissors and fit around the stones.

How to grow moss between pavers

  1. Clear the joints. Pull unwanted grass and lift larger loose rock. The compacted, mineral-heavy ground between pavers is already close to ideal moss substrate — no soil amendment needed.
  2. Hydrate the moss before handling. A gentle misting keeps pieces from crumbling as you work.
  3. Fragment and press. Tear clumps to joint width and press each piece down firmly into the crevice — full contact with the ground is what lets it graft in.
  4. Water in, then mist. Water thoroughly once, then keep the joints lightly moist while the moss establishes. Fragments kept moist colonize within weeks.

Growing moss between patio pavers on a budget: pour the Bryum Moss Milkshake into cracks and crevices and let it colonize, then place a few mature clumps as focal colonies — the fastest-looking result per dollar. How to get moss to grow between pavers reliably comes down to two things: firm contact and steady moisture. The same method covers how to grow moss between flagstone — flagstone joints are simply wider, so use the 20% setting in the calculator. Full planting detail: Moss Planting Guide (PDF).

From the consultation notes

A bluestone walkway in Pennsylvania. Crevices crossing changing sun and shade: the mixed-light answer was sun-tolerant species in the brighter runs — Bryum for the joints — precisely because sun-tolerant moss also grows in shade, so one species can ride the transitions.

Stepping stones toward a zen garden. A California client replacing grass that grew too tall between stones: the plan was a refined moss-filled joint — low, even, and never mowed — as the first stage of a larger fern-and-moss garden.

Milkshake on hardscape. One installation combined a Bryum Milkshake pour across cracks, crevices and corners with mature Bryum patches placed as focal colonies — the slurry fills the network cheaply while the mature moss looks finished on day one.

Questions about moss for walkways and patios

Can you walk on moss between pavers?
Yes, in the way pavers are actually used: feet land mostly on the stone, and the moss in the joints takes only glancing traffic. For a shaded path where feet land on the moss itself, sheet moss is the walkable choice.

How long does moss take to fill paver joints?
Fragmented Bryum pressed into joints and kept moist colonizes within weeks and can graft together in 2 to 4 weeks. A milkshake pour is slower; mature clumps look finished on day one.

Does moss between pavers need soil?
No added soil. The compacted mineral ground already between your pavers is close to ideal; moss attaches to the surface rather than rooting into it.

What about moss for stepping stones in a lawn?
Same species logic: Bryum where the stepping stone path gets sun, carpet or sheet moss in shade. Star moss fills deep gaps where stones sit high.
