What is fern moss? Fern moss is the common name for Thuidium delicatulum, also called delicate fern moss or common fern moss — a true moss whose feathery fronds look like tiny ferns, not a fern itself, and not the "moss fern" houseplant (Selaginella). It grows as a flat, lace-like carpet in moist shade, and it is the lowest-priced landscaping species we carry. What Each Grade Is For
A moist-shade ground cover for woodland floors, boulder blankets and shaded path edges. Airier than sheet moss, so ferns, bulbs and woodland planting push through it. Ships dry and dormant, opens with misting.
The classic fern moss terrarium carpet — it loves exactly the moisture a closed build holds. Fresh-cut, pesticide-free and safe around vivarium animals, from a 3.5 inch square at $6.95.
Where Fern Moss Works
Fern moss is the moisture-lover of the palette: shade, high moisture, and a low to neutral pH. It spreads slowly but is persistent once established — and because it is the least expensive landscaping species we carry, it is the economical pick for big, damp, shaded ground:
Moist woodland floors. Its signature placement: a dark, feathery lawn under canopy where the ground stays damp. As a fern moss lawn it reads softer and more textured than sheet moss. Flat carpet plus isolated mounds reads naturally layered: add cushion moss islands on top.
Boulder blankets. Fern moss drapes over stone in layered sheets. Because it is light and airy, stake it down while it anchors — landscaping pins or natural elements like sticks and stones both work.
Stream edges and wet sites. It prefers wetter conditions than most mosses — near streams, drainage paths, and low spots where other species would need constant help.
Under and around ferns. The classic woodland pairing: because fern moss is airier than sheet moss, ferns, bulbs and woodland plants push through it easily — and taller ferns cast exactly the shade it wants in brighter gardens.
Terrarium and vivarium carpets. The classic humid-build floor — a closed terrarium holds exactly the moisture it wants, and plants root through it as they would on a forest floor.
Shade gardens on a budget. For large damp areas where sheet moss would work but the budget is tight, fern moss covers the same ground for less — from $11.95 down to $4.16 per square foot at volume.

Crusty is not dead
Fern moss curls up and feels crusty whenever it dries — and turns lace-like again when moist. That cycle is normal life for Thuidium, not a health problem. Judge it after misting, never before.
Stake it down
Unlike heavier mosses, fern moss is light and airy — it benefits from being staked while it anchors. Landscaping pins work, and so do sticks and stones laid naturally across the sheets.
Shade by companion
A trick from our consultations: shade mosses can live in brighter sites when placed beneath ferns or inside deliberately shaded microhabitats. Plant the companions first, then carpet beneath them.

Planting and Care by Grade
Landscaping grade
- Prepare like any moss site. Clear competing vegetation and compact the substrate — no compost, no weed fabric. Fern moss takes low to neutral pH, so it is less fussy about acidity than cushion or mood moss.
- Press and stake. Press sheets into firm contact, then stake them down while they anchor — landscaping pins, or sticks and stones laid across the sheets. Light, airy moss lifts in wind and rain until it grips.
- Keep it damp. This is a high-moisture species: mist through establishment and favor ground that stays damp on its own. It tolerates drying — it curls up and waits — but it thrives where water lingers.
- Judge it moist. Curled and crusty means dry, not dead. Mist it and the fronds open back into lace within minutes.

- Ships fresh, not dormant. Press onto the substrate for full contact and keep under bright indirect light — never direct sun through glass.
