What is tree apron moss? Tree apron moss (Anomodon attenuatus), also called tree skirt moss, is the vertical moss of our catalog: fine, skinny, fern-like mats that grow tightly to tree trunks and rock, growing vertically rather than across the ground. It favors mature bark in deciduous forests and mineral-rich stone, including lime. It is not the miniature tree moss (Climacium dendroides) sold by the tree for terrarium forests — different species, different job. It is one of the species in our moss species guide.

What Each Grade Is For

Where Tree Apron Moss Works
Tree apron moss grows vertically — it performs best installed directly onto a compatible vertical or sloped surface, not soil. Medium light, medium moisture, neutral pH, and a hard surface to grip is all it asks:
Tree skirts on mature bark. Its natural habit in deciduous forests: an apron around the base of mature oaks. A trunk base takes 5–10 sq ft; tuck the moss firmly into the bark contours.
The bark-and-base pairing. Tree apron climbs the trunk; mood moss mounds at the foot. Together they make the soft trunk-to-floor transition designers ask for.
Boulder cloaks and lime stone. It cloaks boulders and, unusually for a moss, is happy on mineral-rich and lime stone — the neutral-pH species for masonry-adjacent placements.
Living moss walls. This is the species we supply living walls from — the photos below are tree apron moss on a vertical moss wall. Fix the mats with Moss Tac, mist to establish, and it knits into a continuous green face. For zero-care indoor walls, choose preserved wall tiles instead.
Terrarium backgrounds. The species that turns a build's back wall, branches and rock faces green — vertical structure that carpet mosses can't provide.
Woodland transitions. Its narrow, branching growth softens the line between trunks, boulders and the surrounding floor — use it where hard elements meet sheet moss ground.

Not on soil
Tree apron grows tightly to trunks and rocks, not usually on soil or open ground. If the plan is a flat green floor, choose a groundcover species — this one wants something to climb.
Tuck it into the contours
Install directly against compatible bark or stone and tuck the moss firmly into the surface contours — the grip comes from contact, and Moss Tac helps on vertical or difficult spots.

Planting and Care by Grade
Landscaping grade
- No soil prep — surface prep. Unlike our groundcover species, tree apron is installed on bark or stone, not prepared ground. Brush the surface clean of loose debris and lichen flakes; the surface itself is the substrate.
- Tuck and tack. Press the mats directly against the bark or stone and tuck them firmly into the contours. On vertical or difficult placements, hold them with Moss Tac until they attach.
- Mist the surface, not the ground. Water where the moss lives: mist the trunk skirt or boulder face through establishment. Medium moisture is enough — bark holds humidity at the base naturally.
- Dry is not dead. It ships dry and dormant and greens with misting — judge it wet, never dry.
Terrarium grade
- Ships fresh, not dormant. Press against hardscape, wood or the background and hold with Moss Tac Mini until it grips — then it climbs on its own.
- Bright indirect light and the build’s ambient humidity are enough; mist the vertical surfaces directly when they look dull.
- Safe around vivarium animals: pesticide-free, cut fresh to order. Its narrow, branching mats knit into the hardscape over time — the longer the build runs, the more grown-in the walls look.
