Live Moss for Garden Beds and Borders

This page is the outdoor moss page: landscaping grade, hardy through winter, evergreen when everything else has gone over. (Indoor bowls and sealed builds want the terrarium grades instead — live garden moss is cut and handled differently.) Where each species earns its spot:

Garden beds

Sheet and carpet moss lay the evergreen floor of a shaded bed.

Borders & edges

Fern moss feathers a border; spoon leaved fills the shade beneath plantings.

Under trees

Tree apron moss takes the root-filled ground grass gives up on — and climbs the bark.

Around stone

Mood caps rock, cushion mounds against it — the accents that make stone look settled.

Moss for Zen and Japanese Gardens

The zen garden look is a specific aesthetic: a low, even, unbroken carpet that reads as stillness. Not every species gives it. Sheet, carpet and turf carpet hold that flat, continuous surface; mood and cushion are too textured for it and belong at the edges, as accents against stone. The classic upright accent of Japanese temple gardens is sugigokePolytrichum, sold here as haircap moss.

Composition, styles and species pairings are in the moss garden guide.

Volume pricing is built in: sheet and carpet moss fall from $13.95/sq ft at 1 sq ft to $2.90 at 1,000 (sale tiers struck through); mood moss $15.95 to $6.45; tree apron $18.95 to $7.30; star moss $25.95 to $12.00 at 250.

Live moss is becoming more and more popular with garden designs because:

  • Low Maintenance: Moss needs minimal care; no mowing, fertilizing, or chemicals needed.
  • Erosion Control: Moss can act as a natural ground cover for erosion control.
  • Highly Adaptable: Thrives well in shade and on poor soil.
  • Year-Round Green: It is an evergreen and provides a consistent, vibrant green color in all seasons.
  • Aesthetics: Moss is pretty and creates a magical feeling.

Moss gardening in one place: this page is the idea book, and the shop is the moss garden supplies — live moss by the square foot, Moss Tac for stone and wood, and milkshake jars as the closest thing to a moss garden kit (both also the way to promote moss growth on rocks). Moss is ornamental and perennial — mossy gardens hold their green year round. For a zen garden, moss on the ground plane is the classic move: sheet moss between stones, cushion moss as mounded islands. Garden centers rarely stock live moss — we ship it nationwide from our Pennsylvania facility.

1. Foundational Mosses for Groundcover & Pathways

Below you can find three mosses that can act as a base layer in both sunny and shaded areas. They are used as an alternative to grass, handle foot traffic well, and thrive in areas where other groundcovers fail.

sheet moss

Sheet Moss

Hypnum imponens

This is the most popular shade groundcover moss because it has an even and flat growth pattern. It is often used as primary ground cover for homeowners who seek a flat and uniform texture.

The carpet of a moss garden

Carpet Moss

Hypnum cupressiforme

This moss is a sister of Sheet moss (also of the genus Hypnum) and has almost the same growth pattern. It prefers shade, grows flat, in a creeping carpet pattern, and looks a bit more tufted.

Bryum moss between pavers

Bryum (Sun) Moss

Bryum caespiticium

This is the only groundcover moss that grows well in partial and full sun. It handles foot traffic well, is often used between pavers, or as primary ground cover for sunny gardens and open areas.

“I bought this and some sheet moss. I never knew I could buy live moss but its perfect!”

2. Mosses for Rock Gardens & Distinctive Accents

Watch for radiant heat, not just direct sun. A south facing wall, a stone patio or a pale paved surface stores heat and releases it back, and moss can cook beside architecture that never sees direct sunlight itself. Judge a spot by how warm it feels late in the afternoon, not only by where the sun falls.

The mosses in this section are great for enhancing stone features, creating captivating rock gardens, or adding unique accents to your garden. They create texture and character and are often referred to as accent mosses.

rock cap moss in nature

Rock Cap/Mood Moss

Dicranum scoparium

This moss is perfect for rock gardens because it grows well over rocks and boulders. It grows into lush mounds and creates that texture that many homeowners are looking for. A great moss to grow on stone.

Cushion moss on a trunk

Cushion Moss

Leucobryum glaucum

Cushion moss grows in beautiful, rounded cushions and is another beautiful accent moss. Its unique texture creates focal points for rock gardens or can act as an addition to plants or between garden stones.

Fern moss, Thuidium delicatulum, in a shaded garden

Fern Moss

Thuidium delicatulum

This moss got its name because it resembles a miniature fern forest, and is a beautiful addition to shaded gardens, rock yards, and as an accent moss around ponds. Great to use for a natural and intricate look.

3. Unique Texture Mosses for Vertical & Specialty Areas

For homeowners who seek textured mosses and want to cover vertical surfaces, they can use the mosses in this section. Each has its unique qualities and is appreciated by landscapers for specialty landscaping projects.

Tree Apron Moss at the base of a tree

Tree Apron Moss

Anomodon attenuatus

Use this species for vertical surfaces in your garden. It grows well on trees, logs, but also on stone and wooden structures. A great moss if you want to create a vertical dimension to your garden.

Haircap moss, Polytrichum commune, on a bank

Haircap Moss

Polytrichum commune

Haircap moss has a distinctive, naturalistic, and textured growth form. It resembles a miniature forest and goes well in woodland-style gardens where it creates textural contrast in garden beds.

Star Moss (Aulacomnium) at the base of a tree

Star Moss

Aulacomnium

Star moss has star-shaped tips and takes sun, dappled light or shade. What it will not take is a dry site: it belongs in ground that stays wet, such as a rain garden or a low corner that pools. It is perfect for gardens with open, sunny spaces where it can create texture and a charming focal point.

“I used it to cover an old ugly wall and within 3 weeks it was established. Beautiful!”
