Carpet Moss for Sale | Walkable Shade Groundcover

SHEET MOSS’S WILDER SISTER

Carpet Moss

Hypnum cupressiforme · not the same plant as Turf Carpet Moss

Live carpet moss for sale — large-scale shade groundcover with a rougher, less even face than sheet moss. Takes foot traffic once established, shares sheet moss’s pricing, and suits the garden where a uniform sheet would look too manicured.

Two mosses share the word carpet. This is Carpet Moss, Hypnum cupressiforme — walkable, shade-loving, sheet moss’s close sister. Turf Carpet Moss (Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus) is a different plant for saturated ground that takes no traffic. The botanical name is the one to trust.

What is carpet moss? Carpet moss (Hypnum cupressiforme) is a living, walkable groundcover moss that spreads into broad, flat mats across the floor of deciduous forests — the real plant, not the aquarium “moss carpet” (that is java moss, an aquatic plant we do not sell) and not a rug or artificial turf. It is a close sibling of sheet moss (Hypnum imponens) with a rougher, wilder surface, and a different plant entirely from turf carpet moss (Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus). Shade to deep shade, moderate moisture, and foot traffic once established. It is one of the species profiled in our moss species guide.

Carpet, Sheet or Turf Carpet? Same Word, Three Plants

Carpet moss shares its specification with sheet moss: the same shade, the same pricing, the same tolerance for being walked on once established. Choose it where a uniform sheet would look too manicured — its face is rougher and reads as wilder ground.

What Each Grade Is For

Carpet moss is the one species on this site sold in a single grade — and honestly labeled as such.

Landscaping grade · from $13.95/sq ft

The walkable outdoor carpet

Sold by the square foot, 1 to 1,000, cut to order. This is the dense, low, foot-traffic-tolerant cover for shaded paths, lawns and beds — everything on this page is about placing it well.

Sealed builds · from $4.95

No terrarium cut of this species

Carpet moss (Hypnum cupressiforme) is landscaping-only. For a terrarium or vivarium floor with the same dense-carpet look, use hand-cleaned sheet moss cuts from $4.95 or turf carpet terrarium cuts from $6.95.

Where Carpet Moss Works

In our consultations carpet moss is the flat, velvety layer of the design — the quiet field that makes stone, mounds and ferns read clearly against it:

Between paving stones, in shade. The consultation signature: carpet moss is our primary species between shaded paving stones, where a flat, velvety look keeps the paving geometry legible. Sunny joints go to bryum moss instead.

Walkable shade paths and lawns. Once established it takes foot traffic, so it runs the same moss lawn jobs as sheet moss where a rougher, more textured face fits the garden better — and it shares sheet moss’s pricing ladder.

The field around mounds and stone. The placement map from our consultations: carpet moss between the pavers, mood moss mounding at tree bases and boulders, ferns in the adjacent beds. Flat against round is what makes the design read.

Woodland blending. From our consultations: narrower, uneven patches of other plantings, blending gradually back into a carpet moss field, better support a natural woodland aesthetic than hard planted lines.

Deciduous forest gardens. Its native habitat is the deciduous forest floor, so it belongs under maples, oaks and the dappled-to-deep shade of mature trees — on soil, humus, or thin organic layers over rock.

Not for terrariums, sun, or tanks. We do not cut this species for terrariums — terrarium sheet moss is the closest equivalent. It is a shade moss, not sun-tolerant, and a land moss — not for aquariums.

Straight From Our Consultations

Flat is a design tool

Rounded, tufted mosses read as objects; carpet moss reads as a surface. We use that contrast deliberately — a flat carpet field makes mounded mood moss, stones and paving geometry stand out instead of blurring together.

Honest growth expectations

Carpet moss is slow-growing — a little faster than mood moss, but plan coverage from what you plant, not from spread. For a full look on day one, order the full area; to save, cover 90 to 95 percent and let it knit closed.

Where it earns its keep

A consultation example: roughly 100 square feet of carpet moss as the starting point for a shaded walkway planting — the field between the stones, with mood moss and ferns placed against it. Size from the calculator above and adjust at the edges.

How to Plant and Care for Carpet Moss

Planting

  • Clear and firm the ground. Remove leaves, weeds and loose debris down to bare soil, and press it firm. No weed fabric underneath — the moss needs full contact with the ground.
  • Press each piece down hard. Lay the pieces edge to edge and press firmly — walking them in is good for this species. Full ground contact is what lets it anchor.
  • Between stones: cut pieces to the joint, press in, and keep the surrounding stone swept — the flat, velvety line against the paving is the whole effect.
  • Water to wake it. It ships dry and dormant; a duller green on arrival is normal. Mist on planting day and keep it damp through the first weeks while it anchors.

Care

  • Mist, don’t soak. Shade to deep shade and moderate moisture suit it; brief dry spells are fine once established. Standing water is not.
  • Not sun-tolerant. If part of the area gets real sun, give that zone to bryum moss or full sun moss and let carpet moss hold the shade.
  • Keep it swept. A leaf blower on low or a soft broom in fall — leaf litter left over winter is the main thing that sets a moss carpet back.
  • Growing from scratch? The Shady Moss Milkshake covers ground by fragments instead of mats — slower, cheaper, same species family.

Frequently Asked Questions About Carpet Moss

Is carpet moss the same as sheet moss?

They are sister species in the same genus, close in habit, care and price. Sheet moss (Hypnum imponens) lays a uniform even carpet and is slightly more traffic tolerant; carpet moss (Hypnum cupressiforme) has a rougher, less even face that reads as wilder ground.

Can I use carpet moss in an aquarium or terrarium?

Neither, honestly. The aquarium “moss carpet” is java moss, an aquatic plant we do not sell — carpet moss is a land moss and will not survive submerged. And we do not cut this species for terrariums; the closest terrarium equivalent is sheet moss terrarium grade, its Hypnum sibling.

Is carpet moss the same as turf carpet moss?

No. Turf Carpet Moss is Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus, a different plant that wants saturated ground and takes no foot traffic. Check the botanical name before you buy.

Can I walk on carpet moss?

Yes, once established. In the first weeks gentle walking helps it anchor, and after that it handles normal foot traffic. For daily walked lines, set stepping stones.

My carpet moss arrived brown. Is it dead?

No. Landscaping-grade moss ships dry and dormant, and brown on arrival is normal. Mist it and it greens within minutes. Dry is not dead.

How much should I order?

Order about 90 to 95 percent of the area for an immediate finish. To cover more for less, lay sections half an inch apart and let them knit closed over six to twelve months.
