Where to buy live moss for terrariums

Here, direct from our Pennsylvania facility. We ship nationwide, so there is no need to find a local supplier: order the species you want and it arrives cut to order. Everything on this page is terrarium grade, hand-cleaned and checked for debris and pests before it ships.

What terrarium grade means

Pieces are sized to fit a tank rather than a lawn. It is the same species as our landscaping range, prepared differently, which is why it costs more and why it is the only grade to put inside a sealed build.

Closed or open build?

Closed terrariums hold high humidity, so sheet and cushion moss perform best and stay green with almost no intervention. Mood moss adds height and sculptural interest against hardscape. Open builds and dish gardens dry out faster, so Bryum and full sun moss (Racomitrium) hold up better in the brighter, drier corners where the shade species would struggle.

How much to order

Order by the planted area you want to cover rather than by tank volume. Most builds need less than people expect once rock, wood and planting have taken up the floor. Moss cuts and tears to shape easily, so slightly over is far easier to work with than slightly under, and any surplus keeps: it simply goes dormant again until you need it. Care inside the build

Mist, do not soak, and let surfaces dry between mistings. Moss will stay green as humidity builds, but it should never sit waterlogged: moss that cannot dry out is what develops mold. Moss has no protective cuticle, so keep cleaners, aerosols and chemical treatments away from it entirely.
