Moss Seeds Do Not Exist

Mosses are bryophytes. They are an older lineage than flowering plants and they produce no seeds, no flowers and no roots. So there is nothing to sell called moss seeds, and anyone selling you a packet of them is selling you something else.

That is not a reason to give up on the idea. People shopping for moss seeds usually want one of two real things: spores, which is how moss reproduces in the wild, or fragments, which is how it is propagated in practice. Fragments are what we sell, and they are the faster and more reliable of the two.

A moss spore mix is what most people are picturing, and a moss milkshake is that thing done properly: living moss fragments in a suspension you can pour or paint. The Three Ways Moss Actually Spreads

A mature moss releases spores from a capsule held above the plant. They are dust fine, they travel on air and water, and in the wild that is how moss reaches new ground. It is also slow and unreliable. Conditions have to be right for months and most spores never establish.

Break a piece of moss and each fragment can grow into a new plant. This is how moss is propagated in practice, and it is what a moss milkshake is: living moss broken down into fragments, suspended so you can pour or paint it onto the ground.

Take an established colony, tear it into smaller pieces and space them out. Each piece anchors and spreads. It costs nothing, it works, and most people do not know they are allowed to do it.

What to Buy Instead of Moss Seeds

You can also make more moss from moss you already have. Bryum in particular can be torn into smaller pieces and spaced out, and each piece will anchor and spread. Fragmentation is how moss propagates, and dividing a colony you already own costs nothing.

What You Actually Get, Month by Month

This is the part people are not told, and it is the reason most milkshake installations get written off before they have finished working.

Week 1 to 4	It looks like dirt. There is no visible moss and nothing appears to be happening. This is normal and it is the stage people worry about.
Month 1 to 2	Mold often appears before moss does. It looks like failure and it is not. It passes. Keep misting and leave it alone.
Month 4 to 6	Visible green establishment begins. Thicker patches come through first, which is why an uneven application should be left alone rather than evened out.
Month 6 to 12	The colonies knit together and start behaving like a mat. From here it needs the same care as any established moss.

The single most common thing we are asked to look at is a milkshake that a customer believes has failed at two months. In almost every case it has not. It is at the stage where it looks like dirt, which is the stage it is supposed to be at.

Where a Milkshake Works, and Where It Does Not

Remove the competition first. Moss has no roots to push through turf or weeds. Compact what is left rather than improving it, because rich soil feeds the weeds you have just removed. Firm, stable, low competition ground is what a milkshake needs.

A thicker application establishes faster than a thin one. If the coverage comes out uneven, leave it. The heavier patches will come through first and spread outward, and evening them out slows the whole area down.

Mature moss placed over a milkshake will occupy that ground, and the fragments underneath will not grow through it. Use one method or the other in any given area.

Mist, do not soak, and let it dry between waterings. Use filtered, distilled or rainwater, because the chlorine in untreated tap water is hard on it. Morning is the best time for the first three months.
