What is haircap moss? Haircap moss (also written hair cap moss) is the common name for Polytrichum commune — common haircap, hair moss, or bank haircap — a true moss (kingdom Plantae, division Bryophyta) whose stiff upright stems make it one of the tallest mosses in North America. The genus includes sister species we do not sell, such as juniper haircap (Polytrichum juniperinum) and bristly haircap (Polytrichum piliferum) — and despite the similar name, it is not rock cap moss, which is mood moss. It is one of the species in our moss species guide.
Haircap, Sheet or Star? Pick by the Ground
Haircap is for ground that moves or slopes: it knits soil together. Sheet moss is the flat walkable carpet. Star moss is the wet-site species for ground where water sits. All three take some sun, but only haircap holds a bank.

What Each Grade Is For
Banks that wash out in heavy rain, streambanks, path edges and tall open-shade groundcover. Extremely drought and freeze tolerant once established. Ships dry and dormant.
The miniature pine forest — upright stems give a build vertical structure no carpet moss can. Fresh-cut, pesticide-free, from a 3.5 inch square at $8.95.
Where Haircap Moss Works
Haircap is the structural moss: stiff, upright, columnar stems that hold ground other plants slide off. It takes dappled light, moderate to high moisture, and acidic to neutral ground — including sandy sites most mosses refuse:
Slopes and banks that wash out. Its signature job: excellent erosion control on slopes and streambanks. For steeper grades, Moss Tac improves initial anchoring while the colonies seat in.
Streambank edges. Moderate to high moisture is its comfort zone — the wet, sloping margins where turf fails and mulch washes away.
Path edges and walked ground. The guide credits haircap with tolerating moderate foot traffic — alongside sheet moss, it is one of the two species we recommend where people actually walk.
Japanese gardens. A classic in the tradition: the miniature-forest effect reads as deliberate structure among stones and pruned forms.
Terrarium forests. Upright stems give a build vertical structure no carpet moss can — plant a stand of haircap behind low fern moss carpet and the scale reads like a forest edge.
Exposed, difficult corners. Extremely drought and freeze tolerant once established — but judge each microclimate: one client's haircap struggled only where heat and exposure were greatest.

It changes with moisture — dramatically
Haircap's leaves close and turn brown when dry, then open and reveal green when moist. The change is bigger than most mosses — a bronzed slope after a dry week is dormant, not dying.
Seat the colonies
Because the stems stand tall instead of lying flat, haircap colonies can sit proud of the ground. Dig shallow depressions to seat them securely — on slopes, that seating is what holds the first season.

Planting and Care by Grade
Landscaping grade
- Prepare like any moss site. Clear competing vegetation and compact the substrate — no compost, no weed fabric. Haircap takes acidic to neutral ground and even sandy sites most mosses refuse.
- Seat, don't perch. Dig shallow depressions to seat each colony securely — the tall stems catch wind and water that flat carpets shrug off. On slopes, add Moss Tac for the first season's anchoring.
- Water to establish, then relax. Mist through the first months; keep it moist, not saturated. Once established it is extremely drought and freeze tolerant — the toughest species we carry for exposed banks.
- Read the color. Closed, brown stems mean dry dormancy; they open and reveal green when moist. The swing is dramatic and completely normal.
Terrarium grade
- Ships fresh, not dormant. Seat the stems into the substrate — a shallow pocket keeps the stand upright — and keep under bright indirect light, never direct sun through glass.
- Give it headroom: the upright stems are the point. Plant haircap as the back-of-build forest and carpet the floor with a low species in front.
- Safe around vivarium animals: pesticide-free, cut fresh to order. If stems close and bronze between mistings, that is the normal moisture response — they reopen green.

Frequently Asked Questions About Haircap Moss
It is the best moss for it. Polytrichum anchors with the deepest rhizoid system of any species we carry and knits loose soil together. Specify it on banks, slopes and streambanks where a lawn keeps washing out.
Up to about 8 inches, the tallest moss in our catalog. That height is why it reads as a miniature forest in terrariums and why colonies should be seated in shallow depressions in a landscape.
Occasionally, yes. It is more upright than carpet species, so daily traffic flattens it. Use stepping stones through it and let the stems stand.
Dappled light to part shade is ideal. It is extremely drought and freeze tolerant once established, which makes it forgiving on exposed banks — but in the hottest, most exposed zones of a yard it can struggle, so judge each microclimate rather than the yard as a whole.

They are sister species in the same genus. We grow common haircap (Polytrichum commune) — the taller species of moister ground, and the one used for slope and streambank erosion control. Juniper haircap (Polytrichum juniperinum) is a shorter relative of drier, sunnier, often sandy or disturbed ground; we do not currently sell it.
