Drought-Tolerant Moss

Your moss arrives dry and dormant, not dead.

Moss dries out to survive drought and greens up within minutes of watering. Dry, curled or dull on arrival is normal: mist it, tuck it tight, water it in. After that, mist, do not soak. Only tan and brittle moss is a concern.

Moss that survives dry spells by going dormant and greening up again within hours of rain. For dry banks, rocky ground and sites that bake. The drought-tolerant moss guide compares the specialists — with a calculator.

Drought Tolerant Moss

Drought tolerance in moss does not mean the plant keeps growing without water. It means it shuts down safely, waits, and recovers. A patch that looks grey and crisp in August can be green within hours of the first real rain, which is why drought resistant moss suits sites that no other ground cover will hold.

What to choose

Full Sun Moss (Racomitrium) tolerates intense heat and drought and binds loose soil as it spreads — sand, gravel and exposed rock included. Sun Moss (Bryum) handles dry, exposed paving edges, masonry and urban heat. Haircap Moss is the tallest moss we supply and among the toughest: extremely drought- and freeze-tolerant, excellent for slopes and banks. For sunny ground that stays wet, the answer is star moss instead.

Getting it established

Drought tolerance applies to established moss. Through the first several weeks everything here needs consistent moisture to root in, whatever it will tolerate later.

Drought-Tolerant Moss: Frequently Asked Questions

Is dry, grey moss dead?

No. Dry, pale and curled is dormancy — the drought-survival state. Only tan and brittle moss is a concern.

Does dormant moss need watering back?

A few mistings restart it; established plantings green up on rain alone.
