Your moss arrives dry and dormant, not dead.

Moss dries out to survive drought, staying dormant, holding for months and in some species years, then greening up within minutes of water. Dry, curled or dull on arrival is normal: mist it, tuck it tight, water it in. After that, mist, do not soak, and let it dry between waterings. Only tan and brittle moss is a real concern.

Moss Lawns

A moss lawn stays green year-round, never needs mowing, takes no fertilizer and asks for almost no water once established. It is the practical answer — an evergreen moss ground cover for exactly the places grass keeps failing: shaded, compacted, acidic, root-filled or steep.

For shaded ground

Turf Carpet Moss is the closest thing to a true grass replacement and is soft underfoot. Sheet Moss and Carpet Moss both knit into a walkable surface. Emerald Feather Moss gives a finer texture.

For sun

Full Sun Moss (Racomitrium) handles foot traffic in open, dry sites and is the genuine grass alternative for a sunny lawn. Sun Moss (Bryum) works on sunny terraces and between pavers.

Where moss yards work

Moss yards succeed on the ground that defeats grass: deep shade, compaction, tree roots, slopes and acidic soil. The surface stays green through winter and is never cut.

What to expect

Moss does not spread like grass seed. It establishes from what you lay, then closes gaps over a season or two. Most of the work is in preparation: clear the competing growth, firm the surface, keep it damp while it roots.

Moss Lawns: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I walk on a moss lawn?

Yes — light to medium foot traffic, and light regular use actually helps it knit. Put stepping stones on daily routes.

How much water does it need?

Regular misting only while establishing. Once knitted in, normal rainfall carries it — no irrigation, no mowing, no fertilizer, no chemicals.

How much do I order?

Measure the area and order that coverage — moss closes only small gaps in a season. The cost calculator prices your exact yard at live shop prices.
