Sun-Moss

Your moss arrives dry and dormant, not dead.

Moss dries out to survive drought, staying dormant, holding for months and in some species years, then greening up within minutes of water. Dry, curled or dull on arrival is normal: mist it, tuck it tight, water it in. After that, mist, do not soak, and let it dry between waterings. Only tan and brittle moss is a real concern.

Sun Moss | The Three Species That Take Full Sun

Most moss is a shade plant. If your site takes direct sun for much of the day, the choice narrows to three, and picking outside them is the most common reason a planting fails.

Full Sun Moss (Racomitrium canescens)

The best performer in open, dry, exposed sites. Fine and grass-like, tolerates heat and drought, binds loose soil and handles foot traffic, which makes it the realistic grass alternative for a sunny lawn. Cultivated on a geotextile backing, so it lays like a mat and cuts to any shape.

Sun Moss (Bryum caespiticium)

Compact, creeping patches for sunny terraces, wall tops and the gaps between pavers — it thrives in crevices and masonry joints and takes urban heat.

Star Moss (Aulacomnium palustre)

The wet-site sun species: spongy, chartreuse cushions with star-shaped tips for rain gardens, pond edges and sunny ground that stays wet. For dry sunny slopes and banks, use Racomitrium or haircap moss instead.

If your site is shaded for most of the day, see shade moss instead.

Sun Moss: Frequently Asked Questions

Can any moss survive full sun?

Only these three — sun tolerance is rare. A shade species in open sun bleaches and fails.

Which sun moss for between pavers?

Bryum. It colonizes joints and cracks and recovers from dry spells; for long runs the Bryum milkshake covers more for less.
