Keep planning: The emerald feather collection · Moss for garden features · How to grow moss
A live moss mat of Brachythecium — emerald feather moss — grown onto a soil-free backing. Where a sheet moss carpet is made for covering ground, this one is made for being looked at closely: fine branching fronds and a luminous emerald color that holds its texture on a mat instead of flattening into uniform green. It cuts cleanly, takes to vertical surfaces, and suits interior and display work as readily as a shaded bed.
Why emerald feather moss is the detail mat
Emerald feather grows in delicate, much-branched fronds that stand slightly proud of the backing. At arm’s length you see individual structure rather than a flat plane, and the brighter green shifts noticeably as light moves across it through the day. That is precisely wrong for a lawn seen from twenty feet, and precisely right for anything viewed from two.
It is also the more workable mat. The fronds knit tightly enough to the backing that pieces can be cut into shapes, curved around objects, or fixed vertically without shedding — which is why this is the mat used for feature walls, framed pieces, and event installations. It is not a traffic-tolerant moss: keep it off ground that gets walked on.

Planning a larger area?
Mat pricing drops with volume — select your quantity above for current pricing. Because mats install as finished sheets, they’re often the most economical option once labour is counted, even where loose moss has a lower material cost. Installing your moss mat
On the ground, clear to bare soil, lay the mat and press it into firm contact, then keep it damp for six weeks. For vertical and display work — the use this mat is really made for — cut the pieces to shape with scissors first, then fix them with Moss Tac onto board, stone, or frame, working from the bottom upward so each piece supports the one above. Mist vertical installations more often than ground plantings; gravity drains them faster. Indoors, keep it out of direct sun and mist every few days.
What to expect on arrival
Your mat arrives live but dry — flat, light, and brownish or dull green. This is intentional, not damage: shipping dry keeps the weight down and the moss safe in transit. Unroll it, spray it well, and the color returns to full green within roughly 48 hours.
Live moss mat FAQ
Is the moss on the mat alive?
Yes. It ships live but dry — a natural dormant state for moss. Spray it on arrival and it rehydrates and greens up within about 48 hours.
Can I cut a moss mat to shape?
Yes — trim with scissors or a sharp knife. This mat is particularly suited to feature walls, interiors, display and event work, and small courtyard beds, so cutting to fit edges, curves and awkward corners is part of normal use.
Do moss mats need soil?
No. The moss is grown on a soil-free backing, so it can be laid over prepared soil, rock, or hard surfaces. Moss takes its moisture from the air and from watering rather than from roots in soil.
Moss mat or loose moss — which should I buy?
Choose a mat for instant, continuous coverage, clean soil-free handling, and easy installation on surfaces or vertical work. Choose loose moss — like our sheet moss or carpet moss — when you want the lowest material cost per square foot for a large ground-level area and don’t mind it knitting together over a season.
Which moss mat should I choose?
This mat is Emerald Feather Moss — a fine, delicate, feathery moss with a soft emerald texture. Our Sheet Moss moss mat offers a different texture in the same soil-free format, so pick on the look you want.
