Keep planning: How to make a moss wall · Moss for events & decor
Preserved moss is not a living plant.
It has been treated so it holds its color and texture for years. It will not grow, and it will not revive if you water it — it does not need water, light or soil, and it should not be planted outdoors. Want the living plant instead? Live cushion moss is the same species, cut fresh and sold by the square foot for outdoor planting.
Best uses
- Floral & event design: rounded, dimensional accents in arrangements, centrepieces and installations.
- Green walls & art panels: breaks up flat sheet moss with mounded form and a paler tone.
- Terrariums & dioramas: realistic hummocks and ground contours with no maintenance.
- Retail & interior styling: long-lasting texture for displays, window schemes and photography.
Why choose preserved cushion moss?
- Distinctive shape. Domed, spongy cushions give height and shadow that flat mosses cannot — the reason designers pair it with preserved sheet moss.
- Pale minty green. Its lighter tone reads as contrast against darker preserved species.
- No upkeep. No water, no light, no soil. It holds its color and softness for years.
- Clean and pest-free. Safe for indoor use, arrangements and enclosed displays.
Moss profile
Scientific name: Leucobryum glaucum
Also called: cushion moss, pincushion moss, pillow moss, bun moss
Form: rounded, dome-forming cushions, naturally preserved for decorative use
Color & texture: pale minty to soft green, spongy and dimensional
Sizes: covering 1, 5, 10 and 25 square feet
Care & placement
- Do not water. Preserved moss is not living; watering will damage it.
- Indoor use only. Keep out of direct sunlight and away from prolonged damp, which can affect the color over time.
- Handle dry. Shape it by hand; trim with scissors if you need a specific footprint.
- Fix in place with hot glue, floral adhesive or pins, depending on the substrate.
Works with
Preserved cushion moss is usually combined rather than used alone. Pair it with preserved sheet moss as a flat base layer, and preserved mood moss for upright, tufted texture. The three together give a green wall or arrangement its depth.
