1. Scientific Name

Sphagnum moss is not a single species. The name refers to the genus Sphagnum, of which there are around 380 species worldwide, so the correct scientific name for sphagnum moss in general is simply Sphagnum, or Sphagnum spp. when you mean several of them. The species described in this article is Sphagnum platyphyllum. What is sold as sphagnum moss, including ours, is normally a mix of species rather than one, which is why our listing says Sphagnum spp.

2. Synonyms & Common Names

While Sphagnum moss is the most used common name, it may also be referred to by other synonyms such as;

  • Flat-leaved Peat Moss: This common name refers to the distinctive flat, broad leaves of Sphagnum platyphyllum and differs from other sphagnum species with more cylindrical or narrow leaves.
  • Broad-leaved Sphagnum: This common name refers to the broad leaf structure of this moss species.
  • Carpet Sphagnum: This is another common name and the name highlights the ability of this moss to form dense and carpet-like mats on the surface of wetlands or bogs.
  • Bog Moss: This term can be applied to the whole genus of Sphagnum but sometimes it is specifically used for Sphagnum platyphyllum because of how often it can be found in bog ecosystems.
  • Water-holding Moss: This moss is extremely good at retaining water because it can hold up to 20 times its dry weight.
  • Swamp Sphagnum: This name refers to the adaptation of this moss to swampy areas.

4. Habitat of Sphagnum Moss

Sphagnum moss is an extremely important plant because of its formation of peat moss. This is decomposed plant material that accumulates in wetlands and is very important for carbon sequestration by locking away carbon and creating organic matter that acts as substrate for other plants.

Peat moss (also called ‘peat’) is the organic material that forms in the waterlogged, acidic conditions of peat bogs and other wetlands and consists primarily of dead sphagnum moss but also other decomposed plant material.

5. Distribution

You can find this moss species in temperate and boreal regions across the Northern Hemisphere, and it is distributed over parts of North America, Europe, and Asia.

This plant is commonly found in North America, mainly in the northeastern United States, Canada, and parts of the Pacific Northwest because of the presence of wetland ecosystem,s which it needs to survive.

5.2 Europe and Asia

This moss is a common sight in Europe because it has widely spread and you can find it in the boreal forests and peatlands of Scandinavia, on the British Isles, and to northern Russia. But it didn’t stop there. It is distributed in Asia where it is a dominant species in the Siberian peatlands.

7. The Physical Characteristics of Sphagnum Moss

7.1 Color

The color of Sphagnum moss has high variations and the difference in is color are even obsevered in the same mat of moss. It can range from bright green to yelow-green and the color is a sign of how healthy the plant is but it also shows how much moisture and shade is available. The less favorable the conditions are, the more yellow it becomes.

7.2 Structure and Form

This moss species has branches that spread out in a flat, fan-like pattern. The leaves are larger and more spread out than many other sphagnum species and this is the reason for its second species name ‘platyphyllum‘.
